Crowley Triangle Stamp

The Nyassa Company in the Portuguese colony of Mozambique issued a total of 141 stamps between 1891 and 1929; it is said only a small number of these were actually used for postage in Nyassa, the rest being created to serve “a buoyant philatelic market for the region’s stamps in London.” A recently discovered 142nd issue, featuring the image of English occultist Aleister Crowley sporting an “Eye of Horus” hat — with its pyramid within a sunburst representing insight into spiritual and esoteric matters — falls comfortably within this latter category. Appearing here with thanks to the esteemed philatelic sleuth C. Strecker.
